Resumes/CVs can be submitted only once with your online application as we do not accept updated versions later. Be sure to include all post-secondary educational institutions and the dates attended to each.
The admissions committee requires all applicants to submit a personal statement. Be sure to put your name on your personal statement. Statements can be submitted only once. Your statement should be sincere, direct, and most of all, written by you. Be sure to follow the instructions provided in the online application as to what you should include in your personal statement as each program may have different requirements. You may also use your statement to explain any anomalies in your academic record. Statements are typically one-three pages long and often include an explanation of:
- Why our program is the right fit for your academic/career goals
- Why you want to be part of the program
- A description of your academic goals and your abilities
- A discussion of your plans after completion of the degree
- Information on the area of research you would like to pursue, if applicable
We require three (3) letters of recommendation. You may enter a maximum of five recommenders. Recommendations should be from academic and/or professional references who can attest to your abilities, accomplishments, strengths, knowledge, and experience. If you have experience as a teaching assistant, consider asking your teaching supervisor to write a recommendation. Once you have saved recommendation information, an email request will be sent automatically to the recommender on your behalf. Please advise your recommender to look for this email in their inbox, as well as their spam or junk-mail folder. Only a slight grace period is permitted to receive LORs after the application deadline.
The submission of GRE scores is optional. If you wish to submit test scores, please use 1324 for the institution code and 0000 for the department code. GRE scores must have been earned within the past five years.
Only non-native English speakers who earned an undergraduate degree in the US and are applying to a master’s program are exempt from submitting an English proficiency test score. Otherwise, all non-native English speakers must provide an English proficiency test score to complete their application. This includes ALL PhD applicants, regardless of location of their previous education.
Official test scores need to be sent electronically to Indiana University. You must also upload a scanned copy of your score sheet into the application . It can take a few weeks for scores to be sent and processed, so please plan accordingly.
We accept only current TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores and these can be put into the Test Scores section. Official scores will only attach to an application after submission.

IELTS: Send scores to “Indiana University Bloomington” from the dropdown menu
Duolingo: Send scores to “Indiana University – Undergraduate/Graduate.”
You must scan and upload copies of your transcript(s), mark sheet(s) and degree certification(s) in the Education History Section of the IU Graduate CAS application. Scanned copies are marked as unofficial. These copies need to have been issued by your university to you. We do not accept downloads from student portals or third party evaluations (WES, etc).
The Program Documents section of the IU Graduate application system is specific to the program for which you are applying. In this section, you will need to upload the following:
- Statement of purpose (also known as personal statement) (required)
- Resume/CV (required)
- Scanned copy of your TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scoresheet, if a non-native English speaker (required)
Optional documents may include, but not limited to, the following:
- Achievements (Awards, Honors, Presentations, Publications, Scholarships)
- Bibliographic citations for each paper/publication that has been submitted for publication noting the status of each paper/publication as (1) “In Review;” (2) “Accepted;” or (3) “Published.

Portfolio is optional for all HCI applicants.
Applying to the Human Computer Interaction M.S. and the Informatics Ph.D. Human Computer Interaction Design programs allows you to submit an optional portfolio. Your portfolio should show your best work. An applicant with a software engineering background might submit a system; one with a literature background might submit a critical essay; one with a business background might submit a business plan. Focus on quality, rather than quantity. Portfolios can be submitted only once. No revisions or updates will be allowed. Any portfolios that are submitted must follow the portfolio guidelines.
- You will upload your portfolio in Liaison WebAdmit's Quadrant 4 in the "Other" Document Type Upload area. Your portfolio must be on 8.5 inches by 11.0 inches and can be in portrait or landscape mode. Accepted file types are .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf, .txt, .jpg, .jpeg, .png. The file cannot exceed 15MB.
- On the first page of your portfolio or document with a link to your portfolio, you must include your last name and first name along with the following statement:
"I certify that the work included in this portfolio is my own original work. Work included which was conducted as a part of a team or other group is indicated and attributed as such - the other team members are named and a true description of my role in the project is included."
You must sign this statement to certify the originality and proper attribution. In the event that any work you provided in your portfolio is improperly represented in terms of authorship, your application will be dismissed without review. - If your portfolio is longer than 10 pages, you must include a table of contents as the second page, and you may do so even if your portfolio is shorter.
- Optionally, if you prefer to submit your portfolio as a Web site, you must still submit an 8.5x11 PDF file with the signed certification of originality statement (#2 above) and then also include the URL to your online portfolio. Please be advised that the online portfolio must be live and working when the admissions committee reviews it, and dead links or non-working sites will result in immediate disqualification.
- Do not password protect your portfolio. Protected documents will not be sent with your application.
- Review uploaded documents. The uploading process may have altered your formatting. Please review your portfolio before submitting your application.
- The admissions committee will NOT download any software in order to view or access your portfolio. The admissions committee will not enter a username, password, and/or email address to view or access your portfolio.
- Once you have submitted your application, you will not be able to add more documents and you will NOT be able to replace existing document uploads with new versions or delete uploaded documents. Therefore, before submitting your application, be sure your entire application including your portfolio is in final form.
Below are a few ideas that illustrate the kinds of things you may wish to include in your portfolio. This list is not exhaustive or limited to the following:
- Capstone and/or thesis work
- Design components, including personas, wireframes, UX reports, journey maps, etc.

- Ethnographic work and/or contextual inquiry

- Professional work of any sort
- Published papers, articles, or essays from any field in any form (academic, newspaper, technical writing, etc.)
