In this degree program, students work at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and artificial intelligence to design and develop biomaterials, biomedical devices, computational models, digital health technologies, engineered biological systems, and therapeutic solutions.

The B.S. in Biomedical Engineering at IU Bloomington’s Luddy School prepares you to address important challenges in patient care and human health. Through hands-on experience with emerging biomedical technologies, students build skills in engineering design, computing, and artificial intelligence while exploring areas such as biomaterials, organoid and tissue engineering, medical devices, and AI-enabled healthcare solutions.

Start dates: Fall, Spring
Students will complete 120 credit hours, including IU’s Common Ground courses, core math and science courses (41 hours), an engineering core (28 hours), and select from a large choice of technical electives that allow you to specialize in areas like cellular, tissue and molecular bioengineering; biosensors and devices; computational biology; neuroengineering; medical imaging and medical AI; and global health. In your senior year, you will complete a year-long engineering capstone project, solving real-world biomedical problems under industry-relevant constraints.
Note: Students who select the Pre-Med track will complete two additional credit hours (122 total).
