Double your impact: earn both a Master of Library Science (M.L.S.) and a Master of Information Science (M.I.S.) to become a versatile expert in how people access, manage, and use information.
This combination gives you a broad foundation in managing and shaping how people find, use, and interact with information—a skillset that will only grow in demand. You’ll be prepared for a wide range of careers in academic libraries, nonprofits, government agencies, or private companies.
Interested students can apply directly to the dual degree program, or add a second Masters degree later if they are already enrolled in either the M.L.S. or M.I.S., as long as requirements are met before graduation. An advantage of the dual degree program is that you will only have to complete 57 credits to earn both Masters degrees instead of 72 credits if taken separately.
Navigate requirements with confidence
Pursuing a dual degree is manageable and rewarding, especially with the support of a dedicated faculty advisor. As soon as you’re admitted, you’ll be matched with an advisor who will help you build your course schedule, stay on track with requirements, and align your classes with your evolving goals.
If you’re interested in a dual degree, simply indicate it in your application. Once admitted to both programs, complete the Dual Degree Declaration Form (available in the Current Student Canvas page or by emailing gradvise@iu.edu). After collecting the required signatures, submit the form and your second admission letter to gradvise@iu.edu for approval.
Estimate your tuition and fees
IU’s tuition and fees tool allows you to forecast the cost of credit hours and mandatory fees for your ILS graduate education.
To be considered full time, you must enroll in at least nine credit hours. Anything less is considered part time, which is an option for all students. You can also choose to enroll in more than nine credits if it better suits your goals.
Credit hour fees are different in every school. To get the best estimate of how much your tuition will cost each semester, search tuition rates for both of your dual-degree programs.
Ways to fund your education
If financial concerns are holding you back from applying to this program, we encourage you to explore the various funding opportunities available to ILS students!

"The range of courses offered here enables me to pursue my interests and survey other applications of my degree that I've never considered."
